Perennials.  Colony-forming from rhizomes.  Aromatic.  Stems are often ridged lengthwise; pubescent or glabrous.  Typical height is 3 to 5 feet.

Overall inflorescences are flat- to round-topped, confined mostly to the summit of stems.  The ascending branches each bear small, flat-topped clusters of flower heads on short peduncles.

Flower heads are disc-like, lacking ray floretsFlorets are tubular, most bisexual and fertile, with yellow corollas.  A small number of  florets at the circumference may be pistillate and fertile.

Basal leaves are deciduous by flowering.  Stem leaves are oblong or elliptic in outline, deeply lobed. Margins of primary lobes are toothed or also lobed.

Cypselae are 4-5 angled, flat-topped.  The pappus consists of several minute scales.

Mostly a garden escape; locally common in fields, roadsides and waste places. Flowers July to August.  Not native..
