Perennials.  Plants produce 1 or more stems from a branched caudex.  Stems are thinly pubescent, becoming more densely pubescent near flower heads.  Typical plant height is 1 to 2 ft. (3 to 6 dm).

Inflorescences are compact, located mostly toward the summits of stems.  Branches are typically short.  Flower heads are not arranged one-sided on branches.  Heads are radiate.  Ray and disc florets are yellow, fertile. 

Basal and lowermost stem leaves are often present at flowering and are glabrous.

Plants of alpine habitats (mostly above 2,500 feet), on thin, rocky or sandy soils; northern portions of our region.  Flowers mid- to late summer.  Native.
