Mostly found in gardens, but occasionally escaped from cultivation;  in deeper, mesic to wet soils.  Flowers July to September.  Native to North America (from farther west), but introduced in New York, and considered potentially invasive.  Our plants are:

[ Silphium perfoliatum  (L.)  var.  perfoliatum ]

Perennial.  Colony-forming.  Typical height is 6+ feet.
