Annuals.  Taprooted.  Sap is milky white.  Typical plant height is up to approx. 12 in.

Flower heads are ligulate.  Floret corollas are yellow-orange, bisexual and fertile.  Involucral bracts are approx. equal in length.

Early season:  leaves are basal and stems are more/less leafless.  Later season stems: may bear some leaves.

Plants of sandy or rocky open sites, often sparsely vegetated and/or disturbed.  Flowers mid-May through June.  Native.
