Plants of dry woodlands, open woods or clearings.  Flowers August to September.  Native.

Perennial.  Rhizomatous.  Stems glabrous and typically  glaucous.  Typical height 3 to 5+ feet.

Overall inflorescences open, with numerous ascending branches.  Flower heads few per branch, borne on long peduncles at tips of branches.

Flower heads radiateRay florets 8-13, yellow, neuterDisc florets bisexual and fertile, corollas yellow.  Receptacles flat to slightly convex.   Involucral bracts green, long and slender; the outer surfaces not gland-dotted.

Basal leaves absent at flowering.  Stem leaves opposite, lacking petioles, rounded at the base, lanceolate to lance-ovate, with 3 prominent main veins, toothed margins, and lower surfaces that are gland-dotted.

Similar species:  Helianthus decapetalus.
