Annuals.  Taprooted or fibrous-rooted.  Stems are usually covered with dense, whitish, cobweb-like hairs.  Typical plant height is from 3 to 6+ in.

Inflorescences consist mostly of small, compact, clusters of flower heads, located at the summits of stems or branches, or in leaf axils.

Flower heads are discoid, small and rather inconspicuous.  Ray florets are lacking.  Florets are mixed; peripheral florets are pistillate; central florets are bisexual.

Basal leaves are not present at flowering.  Stem leaves are narrowly oblanceolate, grayish-green (due to dense hairs).

Plants of damp or dry, mostly open, sites with relatively sparse competition from other plants; including disturbed sites such as waste-places.  Flowers July to September.  Not native.
