Perennials.  Stems are usually solitary from a short rhizome, densely pubescent throughout.  Typical plant height is 2 to 3+ ft. (6 to 9+ dm).

The overall inflorescence is corymb-like, flat-topped.  Branch inflorescences are corymb-like, flower heads are located at the tips of branches on short peduncles.

Flower heads are discoid.  Ray florets are lacking.  Disc florets are  bisexual, fertile, corollas white.  Involucral bracts are pubescent and gland-dotted.

Basal leaves are typically deciduous by flowering.  Stem leaves are opposite, ovate to broadly lanceolate, coarsely-toothed or lobed, pubescent and gland-dotted, lacking petioles.

Plants of dry or mesic open sites, often in sandy, disturbed ground.  Flowers August to September.  Native.
