Perennials.  Colony-forming from rhizomes.  Stems are densely pubescent.  Typical height is from 1 to 2 feet.

Inflorescences are approximately flat-topped, consisting of from 1-4(-5) flower heads located at or near the summit of each stem.

Flower heads are radiateRay florets are pale blue-violet, pistillate and fertile; numbering from 50-100 per head; rays 0.8-1.7 mm wide.  Disc florets are yellow, bisexual and fertile.  Involucres are hemispheric (half-spherical).  Involucral bracts are nearly equal in length.

Basal leaves are typically present at flowering; oblanceolate to obovate, obscurely toothed.  Stem leaves are relatively few, elliptic to oblanceolate; clasping.

Plants of fields, roadsides, open disturbed areas, woodland trails, lawns.  Flowers mid-April to early June.  Native.  Our plants are:
