Flower heads are radiate, borne singly on very long peduncles.  Ray florets are yellow, sterile.  Disc florets are yellow, bisexual and fertile.

Basal leaves are often present at flowering.  Most stem leaves are borne within the lower quarter to third of plant height.  Leaves may be unlobed or irregularly lobed.

Cypselae are roundish,with thin, flat wings.  The pappus consists of two short teeth.

Plants of fields, roadsides, open disturbed areas; mostly a garden species that escapes occasionally.  Flowers June and July.  Not native in northeastern states.

Perennials.  Plants produce 1 or more stems from a short  caudex.  Stems are leafy toward the base, leafless above.  Typical height is from 2 to 3 feet.
