Annuals.  Stems are straight, densely pubescent with long, spreading hairs. Typical height is 3 to 5 feet.

Inflorescences are tall, many branched, bearing many small flower heads; often peaked (pyramidal or conical) in shape.

Flower heads are radiateRay florets are inconspicuous (up to 1 mm long), white, pistillate and fertile, often out-numbering the disc florets.  Disc florets are pale yellow, bisexual and fertile.  Involucral bracts are of unequal length (graduated), in several series.

Basal leaves are usually withered by flowering.  Stem leaves are numerous and often congested, alternate, narrowly oblanceolate to linear, hairy.

Plants of fields, roadsides, open disturbed areas, waste places. Flowers July to September.  Native.
