Annuals.  Typical plant height is 2 to 3+ ft. (6 to 9+ dm).  Plants usually produce a stem, which is branched along much of its length.  Flower heads are located at the tips of branches, singly or in small clusters on long peduncles.

Flower heads are usually discoid (i.e., rayless), but sometimes have 3-5 diminutive yellow rays (up to 7 mm in length), which are sterile.  Disc florets are yellow, bisexual and fertile.  The outer series of involucral bracts contains from 10-16+ herbaceous, spreading, ciliate, pubescent bracts.

Stem leaves mostly opposite, compound, divided into 3-5 lanceolate, coarsely-toothed, often hairy leaflets.

Cypselae are flattened, broader and truncate at the summit, narrowed to the base.  The pappus is of 2, minutely barbed awns.

Plants of a variety of sites, often wet or damp habitats, including human disturbed places.  Flowers late August through September.  Native.
