Plants of wet open habitats.  Flowers September to early October.  Introduced in NY.

Annual.  Typical height is 3 to 4 feet.

Inflorescences are open, consisting of a few flower heads located at the summits of stems or ends of branches.

Flower heads are radiateRay florets are 8, neuter, yellowDisc florets are bisexual and fertile, the corollas yellow-orange.  Involucral bracts are in two series: an inner series of short, yellowish, petal-like bracts, and an outer series of longer, narrower, green, leaf-like bracts.

Basal leaves are usually absent.  Stem leaves are opposite, ovate in overall outline, deeply lobed, the lobes linear to lance-linear and  coarsely toothed.

Cypselae are brown to black, compressed, flat at the summit, narrowing toward the base, the faces sometimes with tuberculi.  The pappus is of 2 very small, minutely barbed awns.

Similar species:  Bidens aristosa.
