Plants of fields, roadsides and open disturbed areas.  Flowers August to September.  Native.

Perennial.  Rhizomatous.  May form colonies.  Typical height is from 1 to 2 feet.

Inflorescences are flat-topped or round-topped, with flower heads clustered at or near the tops of stems

Flower heads are discoid, mainly unisexual.  Florets are narrowly tubular, yellow, rayless.  Staminate and pistillate heads may be on the same or on different plants.  Pistillate heads may sometimes contain a few staminate florets.  Involucral bracts are dry and paper-like, lacking chlorophyll (appearing bright white).

Basal leaves may be present at flowering, or deciduous in dry conditions.  Leaves are linear, densely pubescent with matted hairs ("cobwebby").
