Perennials.  Fibrous-rooted or sometimes rhizomatous.  Typical height is 2 to 4 feet.

Inflorescences are flat-topped to round-topped, located  at the tops of stems.  Flower heads are borne on short peduncles in corymb-like arrangements at the tips of short branches.

Flower heads are discoidRay florets are lacking.  Floret corollas are white, bisexual and fertile.

Basal leaves are typically absent at flowering.  Stem leaves are mostly opposite, broadly ovate to triangular in outline, tapering abruptly to flat or slightly rounded bases, and borne on long petioles.

Plants of woods, edges of woods and clearings.  Flowers August to September.  Native.  Our plants are:
